Emergency preparation for crises and disasters Blackout, flooding, storms, external threats – are you prepared?
Recent large power cuts in Spain and Berlin have clearly shown how quickly everyday life can be disrupted. Millions of people were without electricity, heating and digital communication for hours. Experts in Germany also warn regularly about growing risks from extreme weather, technical failures or cyberattacks. But how well prepared are we really?
A recent survey shows that many people do not know what to do during a long power cut or another emergency. Only a small number of households have enough supplies or a well-stocked first aid kit. However, personal preparedness is an important part of safety. Authorities such as the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance have recommended preparation for a long time, but only about one third of the population would be able to take care of themselves for more than one week.
The Volkshochschule Landkreis Cuxhaven is addressing this important topic and offers a compact course on emergency preparedness. Participants learn how to protect themselves and their family in an emergency. The course provides practical knowledge on topics such as:
• how to act during power cuts, fires and extreme weather,
• how to create an emergency supplies plan,
• how to organise important documents,
• how to set up, recognise and understand warning systems,
• neighbourly help and personal protection,
• official rules, measures and restrictions.
Those who are prepared can act calmly and effectively in an emergency and will not be taken by surprise. The course is for all people who want to take responsibility – for themselves and for others.
